Brighter And some

2016 was the Year of the Renovator

by Kate Watt, Marketing Manager 1 February 2017

Is it just us or are the queues at Bunnings a little shorter lately?

Perhaps it’s because the renovators are still recovering from a huge 2016, with recent data showing more than half of all Aussie home owners did some form of repair or improvement to their home last year.

The latest findings from Roy Morgan Research reveal that close to 8.4 million (or 62%) of Australia’s 13.6 million home owners picked up the tools last year — up from 7.5 million (57%) three years earlier.

So what kind of improvements kept us busy on the weekends? Check out how many home owners reported under taking the following improvements:

  • Minor repairs / alternations – 5.8 million home owners
  • Painting – 3.7 million
  • Plumbing – 3.4 million
  • Electrical work – 3.4 million
  • Redecorated or refurbished – 2.9 million
  • Installed installation – almost half a million

And it wasn’t cheap. More than 2.2 million Aussie home owners reported spending more than $5,000 on renovating or extending their home.

The survey also found people who have spent less than a year at their current address are more likely to have made home improvements than long-settled owners.
