#4 Autumn garden projects

by Kate Watt, Marketing Manager 26 March 2024

Crisper mornings have started signalling a long-awaited change of season for Brisbanites tired from sweltering through a north Queensland summer here in the south east.

Energised with an autumn spring in your step, now is the time to get your garden projects into action for the year ahead.

Green thumbs, entertainers and home bodies can find some inspiration from these autumn gardening hacks.

  1. DIY pizza oven. The only thing more off-putting than building an outdoor pizza oven in the sweltering Brissie summer is the thought of using it in summer too! But now mornings and evenings are cooler, the thought of a toasty oven is not such a bad thing. Hit Bunnings for some inspo or check online for DIY kits that can see you enjoying the simple pleasure of a wood fired pizza without needing an engineering degree.
  2. The fire pit. This one doesn’t require much DIY at all! Just jump online or head to Hammerbarn (… we mean Bunnings of course) to snag one. The DIY enthusiast can add some pizazz to this project by creating a flat, paved seating area in your garden perfect to crowd around on a cold winter night.
  3. The vege patch. Weed out that overgrown summer weed pit, grab some sugar cane mulch and start planning winter greens, root veges and pumpkin vines to get your home grown vege soup started now.
  4. Prune, trim, edge, mow and mulch. Survey the overgrown mess that is your summer garden, take a deep breath, grab a garden tool of your choice, and get pruning. Taming your garden now will give you months ahead of clean, cropped, manageable hedges, lawns and edges during the slower growth autumn and winter seasons.
