Earn rental cash from your home while you holiday

by Kate Watt, Marketing Manager 22 June 2016

As AirBnB continues to democratise the holiday rental market, ordinary Brisbane homeowners are turning their residences into money-spinners while they holiday.

You don’t need to rent your home for months at a time. If you’re going away for even a few days or weeks you can advertise your pad as a short-term rental and earn some dollars.

The Watt Realty grapevine knows of an Albany Creek family who rented out their three-bedroom home on AirBnB while they visited rellies overseas.

Would they do it again? Definitely.

Of course, not every home and guest is a match made in heaven. If you’re considering putting your own house to work while you holiday make sure you consider the risks and benefits and research important details like insurance and tax implications.

If you decide to take the plunge, Houzz offers these tips to get your house in order for the share economy.

  1. A sensor light to illuminate the front door and a visible lockbox to store keys will make it easy for guests to access your home.
  2. Stock the pantry with basic supplies like salt, pepper and oil, restock cleaning essentials regularly and don’t forget the toilet paper!
  3. Invest in a luggage rack so heavy suitcases don’t end up on your favourite furniture.
