Farewell NHFIC. Hello Housing Australia.

by Kate Watt, Marketing Manager 9 November 2023

The property world loves a good acronym but we suspect very few people will miss trying to guess what NHFIC stood for.

And was it NFHIC or NHFIC. For NHFIC’s sake, we forget too!

Their website tells us it was the National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation. But not anymore.

From October 12 it has become Housing Australia as it takes on responsibility for an expanded remit, including delivery of social and affordable homes. So why should you care?

This is the very handy organisation that administers the government schemes to help first time buyers and others buy a home with a minimum deposit.

As a reminder these include:

  • The First Home Guarantee supports eligible first home buyers to purchase a home for as little as 5 per cent deposit without paying lenders mortgage insurance
  • The Regional First Home Buyer Guarantee supports eligible regional home buyers to purchase a home for as little as 5 per cent deposit without paying lenders mortgage insurance.
  • The Family Home Guarantee supports eligible single parents or single legal guardians to buy a home with as little as 2 per cent deposit without paying lenders mortgage insurance.

So update your website details and say farewell to NFHIC and hello to housingaustralia.gov.au.
