Market update: Government ‘Home Builder’ Scheme

by Justin Watt, CEO 4 June 2020

Prime minister Scomo has unveiled the first details of the government's $688 million “home builder” scheme.

The scheme will fund grants worth $25,000 for home renovations between 4 June and 31 December.
To be eligible, single applicants must earn less than $125,000 a year or $200,000 per couple.
New homes valued up to $750,000 will qualify as will renovations worth between $150,000 and $750,000 that result in the property being worth under $1.5 million.
This scheme is designed to rescue the building and construction industry by providing immediate work. The industry has taken a hard hit since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic with around 70,000 tradies losing their jobs.
Forecasts show instead of 160,000 homes built this year, it’s now predicted that it could be as low as 100,000. If that happens, tens of thousands more tradies will lose their jobs.
