Brissie edges out other Aussie capitals to make world’s greatest place list

by Kate Watt, Marketing Manager 22 March 2023

In a decision bound to set the Twittersphere a flutter, Brisbane has been named as one of the World’s Greatest Places of 2023 by Time magazine.

The list of “50 extraordinary destinations to explore” includes just one other Australian locale, Kangaroo Island.

We’re otherwise rubbing shoulders with the likes of Kyoto in Japan, Yosemite National Park in California, and St Moritz in Switzerland. Pretty swanky right?

Time reports that it compiled the list “with an eye toward those (places) offering new and exciting experiences”.

For our part, Brissie was noted for our pre-Olympic “ambitious infrastructural advancements, which visitors can enjoy before the crowds pour in”.

Notably Queens Wharf is set to begin a phased opening from November 2023. The development will boast a 100-metre-high observation deck overlooking our river city skyline and beyond.

Is anyone else picking up Singapore Marina Bay Sands vibes?

Brissie also earned praise for championing our local foodies and retailers.

“Beyond the central business district, the James Street Precinct is a welcome testament to how urban development can champion local businesses and artisans rather than supplanting them. The semi-industrial area leverages Brisbane’s perennial sunshine to showcase an outdoor promenade anchored by artsy boutiques and cafés, all under the canopy of Moreton Bay fig trees.”

We think it’s pretty special too – almost as typically Brisbane as fish and chips at Sandgate.
